Gridiron: Wolves edged out in battle with Tigers

EDINBURGH WOLVES saw their four-game winning streak come to an end in a hard-fought struggle against American football rivals Glasgow Tigers at Meadowbank yesterday.

Glasgow got off to a fierce start as they marched down the field before running back Kieron Phillips powered into the endzone from three yards out.

Things finally started to go in the Wolves' favour after the interval when quarterback Allan Price made a dash for the endzone up the left sideline, but was brought down just a few yards from the goal. A second run saw Price burst over the line for the touchdown, bringing the sides level at 7-7.

In the dying minutes, Glasgow missed a field goal only for the referee to award them a first down after a charge of roughing the kicker.

Quarterback Matt McCusker then found wide receiver Andrew Burns with a short pass wide right which he took in for a touchdown.

With just seconds remaining, Paul McEwan weaved his way through the defence to reach the Glasgow 25 yard-line. But despite reaching the five-yard line, Wolves were unable to capitalise and the game ended 13-7.
