Gong for Griffiths but now he's going for goal record

LEIGH GRIFFITHS today set his sights on becoming Livingston's most prolific goalscorer in a season after being named the best player in the First Division by his fellow pros at the PFA awards.

Sparky's goal against Ross County on Saturday took him past David Bingham's tally of 20 goals, scored in the club's debut SPL season in 2001-2002 and level with the record set by Jason Young in the club's first season at Almondvale in 1995-96.

The Lions' final game of the season is on Saturday, at home to Queen of the South, and Griffiths, who has missed a third of the season through injury, said: "If I break the record then great, it will be something to think about when the season is over."

Griffiths scored an exquisite free-kick after he was brought down just outside the box when he used his pace to streak past the County defenders. County's Alex Keddie clearly tugged his shirt and was sent off. Griffiths then curled the free-kick past Derek Soutar with his left foot.

Andrew Halliday put Livingston 2-0 ahead after 51 minutes, but with the three points seemingly wrapped up, County then made Livingston pay for sitting back. And it was former Almondvale striker Steven Craig who did the damage, scoring twice in five minutes.

His first came just three minutes after Halliday had scored when he latched onto a pass from another former Lion – Richard Brittain – and smashed the ball home.

Then Cameron MacDonald brought down Craig in the penalty area and he got back up to score from 12 yards.
