Golf: Twists and turns at Turnhouse see Caldwell survive scare
TOM CALDWELL, a former winner, survived a scare in one of the first-round matches in the Turnhouse Open.
The Silverknowes player birdied the 16th to go two up with two to play only for his opponent, Graeme Wallace from Turnhouse, to win both of them with birdies.
Caldwell then missed a tiddler to seal it at the 21st before making amends with a hole-winning birdie-4 at the next.
Caldwell's next opponent is Stevie Armstrong, who was always in control after winning the opening two holes against Iain Melville from Glencorse.
Graham Robertson, the defending champion, putted in from off the green for an eagle at the last to secure his win against a tenacious James Tetlow.
Robertson now faces Lindsay Gordon, who resumed at the fourth hole after play had been stopped due to fog on Monday night and beat Neil Anderson by 3 and 1.
Just as he'd done when they met in the final of the 2000 Lothians Championship, Mark Timmins beat Keith Reilly, earning a tie against John Tait from Dundas Parks.
David Ewen, a member of Carrickvale's history-making Dispatch Trophy team, birdied the second, third and fourth holes on his way to a win over Thomas Beattie from Grangemouth. Next up for him is a clash with Turnhouse junior champion Scott Young.
