Golf: Mid and East bounce back with wins to level League

MID and East, the two teams who lost in the opening round of matches, bounced back to beat West and Fife respectively in the latest fixtures in the Fife & Lothians Golf Association Winter League.

Both games went to the wire, Sean McGarvey clinching the win for Mid at Prestonfield and Stephen Neilson doing likewise for East at Haddington.

McGarvey of Glencorse recovered from being two down after 11 to beat Kevin Messer after winning the last with a par-4, adding to earlier victories for the home side from Graeme Fraser, Stuart Thorburn, Graham Turner and Malcolm Campbell.

West's wins came from Simon Lockhart, Keith Reilly, Graham Robertson and Louis Gaughan, with the halved match being fought out by Aaron McHardy, of the host club, and Dalmahoy's Tom Blennerhasset.

At Haddington, Neilson, who came to the last one up against Lawrie Clark, secured a cast-iron par-4 to half the hole.

Earlier Mark Hillson had given East the perfect start with a big win over Stewart Elder in the top match, while Dean Muir, Ben McLeod and Grant Forrest also chalked up points for the hosts.

The results mean all four teams are now locked on two points going into the next matches – Mid v East at Newbattle and Fife v West at Charleton – on 8 November.
