Lexi Thompson and Meena Lee shared the lead after carding 66s in the opening round of the Wegmans LPGA Championship in Pittsford, New York.

Nineteen-year-old American Thompson, targeting her second major of the year, started with three birdies over the first five holes and was flawless through 14. Bogeys on 15 and 16 set her back, but she picked up a shot at the 18th to end her day on a high.

“Overall it was just a really solid round,” Thompson said. “I mean I started off with birdieing two and three, so that got me a little confidence early in the round, and I just tried to keep that going, pretty much keep that steady pace going.”

On her back-to-back bogeys on the back nine, she added: “Well, you know, I hit good shots off the tee into the green. It’s just I three-putted both of them. I just didn’t have good speed on the two putts and didn’t make the come-backers.

“It happens - It’s golf. You’re going to hit bad shots and miss putts, so I just tried not to let it get to me and just tried to birdie one of the last two and unfortunately it was the harder one of the holes (18), so I was pretty happy about that.”

South Korea’s Lee also enjoyed eight birdies, blotting her copybook only with bogeys on five and 13.

American Brittany Lincicome, Canadian Jennifer Kirby, Colombia’s Lisa McCloskey were a shot back in a tie for third, with China’s Shanshan Feng and American Cristie Kerr one further adrift after 68s.

Scotland’s Catriona Matthew and Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist were among a cluster of players three shots off the lead after 69s.

World number one Stacey Lewis of the United States and England’s Laura Davies were among those on one under, tied for 29th.
