Scots team selections ‘formalised’

THE days of selectors sitting down with a blank piece of paper to pick Scottish golf teams are over after the SGU announced a “formalisation” of its selection process.

The new document is designed to let the country’s leading amateurs know exactly what is required of them in terms of performances to represent Scotland in events such as the Eisenhower Trophy, the European Team Championship and the Home Internationals.

For this year’s Home Internationals at Glasgow Gailes, for instance, the 11-strong team will consist of the top four Scottish players on the world rankings and the top four on the Scottish Order of Merit – both after the Newlands Trophy at the end of July – plus three selectors’ picks after the Scottish Amateur.

For the Eisenhower Trophy, which the Scots will be trying to win for a second time in three stagings in Turkey in October, the top-ranked world player will join forces with two selected players. “This document clearly outlines the systems we have in place as we strive to ensure both the most talented and potentially talented players are supported within our squad structure,” said Scottish golf performance manager Steve Paulding.
