Golf briefs: Ryu So-yeon shoots 61 to take four-shot lead

LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR: US Open champion Ryu So-yeon fired a stunning 11-under-par round of 61 to take a four-shot lead at the midway point of the Australian Ladies Masters on the Gold Coast yesterday.

The South Korean was one over after two holes after bogeying the par-four second, but she then embarked on a remarkable run that brought her 12 birdies in the remaining 16 holes to move to 17 under for the tournament at Royal Pines.

That left her four shots clear of nearest challenger Christel Boeljon of Holland, who carded a 65. Three shots further back were Lee Bomee, of South Korea, and Australian Nikki Campbell. Scotland’s Kylie Walker shot a second 71 to lie two-under, with Clare Queen a shot back, but Vikki Laing’s second level-par round saw her narrowly miss the cut,

Paul O’Hara trails going into final round

EPD TOUR: Paul O’Hara is just outside the top-ten with one round to go in the Sueno Pines Classic, while rookie pro David Law made his first cut this year. Ellon’s Ross Cameron and Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh) missed the cut by four and 11 shots respectively. Motherwell’s O’Hara is joint 11th after a one-birdie 74 for one-under 143 – nine shots behind the German leader, Daniel Wunsche (67-67). Aberdonian Law has had a pair of 73s for 146 and is sharing 26th place. He birdied the 12th, 14th and long 15th and only a bogey at the short 16th prevented him matching par.

Disappointment for Byrne at first event

ASIAN TOUR: James Byrne’s first crack at an event the professional circuit ended in disappointing fashion yesterday as he missed the cut at the Myanmar Open. The rookie pro from Banchory had seen his first round end in disappointment, as two bogeys on the last three holes saw him finish with a 70. But yesterday, he went from bad to worse, carding a two-over-par 74 which saw him miss the cut by two. Scott Hend, of Australia, leads the way on 13-under heading into the weekend’s final rounds, one ahead of Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand.
