Hayston’s Stephen Gray capped a memorable trip to the Highlands by winning the Spey Valley 36-hole Challenge in Aviemore.
Following up an opening 73 that included a hole-in-one at the 16th, Gray carded a four-under-par 68 to finish a shot ahead of both Gamola Golf’s Greg McBain (69) and Banchory’s Greig Hutcheon (69).
The win earned Gray a cheque for £1,750.
• EUROPRO TOUR: Paul McKechnie (Braid Hills) trimmed 11 shots off his opening round with a four-under 69 on day two of the Motocaddy Masters at Wensum Valley in Norfolk.
It lifted him into a tie for 15th heading into today’s final round, which sees Elliot Saltman (Archerfield Links) lying joint-fourth after a second-round 74. On level-par, he’s four shots behind leader Billy Fowles.
• ALPS TOUR: Kris Nicol (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) is lying joint-13th after carding a two-under 71 in the opening round of the Rebetz Open in France.
Three behind the joint-leaders, Nicol’s promising start outshone the efforts of compatriots Ross Cameron (73) and Michael Stewart (79).
French duo Julien Floret and Fabien Marty share the lead with Spaniard Jesus Legarrea.
Feggans to fore after 71 in Spain
• LET ACCESS SERIES: Pamela Feggans leads the Scottish contingent after bagging four birdies en route to a one-over 71 in the first round of the Galicia Ladies Open at Panton, Spain. It earned the Ayrshirewoman a share of 17th spot, ahead of Katie McNicoll (72), Krystle Falkner (73), Laura Murray (73), Michelle Thomson (74) and Heather MacRae (76). Margarita Ramos and Christine Wolf lead after 65s.
New Frontier feat for Thompsett
• COLLEGE GOLF: Aboyne’s Daniel Thompsett, a second-year student at Rocky Mountain College, Montana, has won the Frontier Conference Championship to qualify for the NAIA national championship later this month.
Thompsett, the 2011 North-East boys’ champion and coached by Andrew Locke (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre), shot rounds of 74, 70 and 71 for a one-under-par total of 145 at Larchmont Golf Club in Missoula, Montana.
