Haas' title on Torrance return

• SAM Torrance had to settle for a share of 34th place on his return to Oak Hill in the US Senior PGA championship in Rochester.

The 54-year-old, who helped Europe to Ryder Cup glory over the New York course back in 1995, signed off with a five-over 75 for an 18-over 298, 12 strokes behind winner Jay Haas, who claimed the title for the second time in three years with a 287. Haas closed with a 74 to pip former Masters champion Bernhard Langer by a stroke.

Seniors Tour rookie Sandy Lyle posted a 73 for a 299 while Anglo-Scot Bill Longmuir had a 77 for 309.

Scots trio in elite squad

• CALLUM Macaulay, Wallace Booth and Keir McNicoll have been included in the GB&I training squad for this season's St Andrews Trophy match at Kingsbarns.

The Scottish trio form part of a 16-strong elite squad which has also been picked with next year's Walker Cup against the US in mind. The players will gather at Kingsbarns on 9-10 June ahead of GB&I's defence of the St Andrews Trophy against the Continent of Europe in August.

Mann to fore in qualifying round

• CARNOUSTIE'S Lindsay Mann topped the standings in the Wishaw 36-hole Pro-Am qualifying round last night. The former Walker Cup player fired a one-under 68 to finish a stroke ahead of Paul Malone (Braid Hills), Scott Catlin (Greenburn) and Graeme Lornie (unattached).

Mann's Carnoustie colleague Lee Vannet, the former British Boys' champion, also progressed with a 71. A total of 24 players qualified for the 36-hole order of merit Pro-Am which will be held at Wishaw over the weekend of 7-8 June.

• MICHAEL Stewart, the new Scottish Boys' champion, leads Scotland's youths' side into action against Ireland in the annual international match at Scotscraig today.
