Golf: Jacklin joins party to honour Park
FORMER Open champion Tony Jacklin is heading to Musselburgh this July to take part in a celebration to honour one of the town's greatest golfing sons, writes MARTIN DEMPSTER.
The Scottish Golf Heritage Festival will mark the 150th anniversary of Willie Park senior winning the first Open Championship and Jacklin, who lifted the Claret Jug in 1969, is looking forward to his involvement.
"I am delighted to be attending this event to celebrate Willie Park's remarkable achievement and unite with the people of Musselburgh and golfers worldwide," said the Englishman.
"In 2005, I had the honour of introducing him at his induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame."
Referring to Musselburgh Old Course being recognised by Guinness World Records as the oldest surviving course in the world, he added: "I am thrilled at the prospect of playing at his home course and I hope golfers sit up and take notice of how important Musselburgh was to the formation of the game we all enjoy today."
The event is taking place on 9-12 July, the week before the 150th Open Championship is played at St Andrews.
"Competitors will help us celebrate the unique achievement of the legendary Willie Park senior," said Robin McGregor, chief executive of 1672 Golf Management Solutions Ltd, the event organiser and also secretary of Musselburgh Old Course.
Kenny Craig, a director of 1672 Golf, added: "We intend to showcase East Lothian at its very best during our festival day on 12 July. Spectators will be entertained by many off-course activities, including a spectacular golf trick show, golf history tours of the clubhouse and surrounding area and a 'tented village' for East Lothian producers to show off their superb range of products.
"There will be no charge for those wishing to just come along and enjoy the activities. It will be a superb family and community day out and everyone is welcome, including non-golfers."
Musselburgh-born Park beat a field of eight to win in 1860, lifting the title again in 1863, 1866 and 1875. He was also runner-up four times.
