Gee glad he had chance to test out Durek
NOT a single Scot has made it past the first round of this year's Scottish Open at Craiglockhart Tennis Centre. Prestwick 17-year-old, Calum Gee, the sole Scot in either the Men's $15,000 or Ladies $10,000 main draws was beaten in yesterday's opening round.
A wild card in his first ever men's event, Gee won the second set of the 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 encounter and even appeared to have rattled the world 423rd ranked player.
"In the second set I had a reasonably long service game to go 3-2 up, then I played a really good game to break at 4-2," said Gee. "Then I was very solid, I didn't make too many errors and got the set. I think he was quite taken aback that I had played consistently and won the set."
Despite being invigorated by playing in his first senior event, Gee will now step back down to the familiar territory of the junior circuit including Edinburgh's Scottish Junior International Championships in July, hosted by Craiglockhart.
His four-year stint at the Sanchez-Casal Academy in Barcelona is due to end in a month's time, after which he plans to start a degree in America, at the same time beginning his transition into the senior game.
"The match was against the highest-ranked player I have ever played so it was a great experience."
