French club bid to lure Giteau with £4.25m deal
AUSTRALIA fly-half Matt Giteau is reported to have been offered a four-year contract worth £4.25m to play club rugby in France.
Giteau, who is contracted to the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) until after the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand, has met representatives from French club Bayonne, Sydney's Daily Telegraph reported.
The newspaper said the contract would make him the highest-paid player in world rugby.
Local media reported that Giteau was interested in securing a temporary release from his ARU contract in order to pursue a sabbatical in Europe, similar to the one negotiated by All Blacks flyhalf Dan Carter. Carter is due to join Perpignan following the All Blacks' grand slam tour which finished yesterday with their final Test against England, before returning to New Zealand for internationals next June. The ARU, however, said Giteau had not requested a release.
