Foster and Velicka go out on loan
Rangers made a deadline day loan signing of Aberdeen utility man Richard Foster, with the pacy 25-year-old brought in for cover.
The move saw former Hearts striker Andrius Velicka head the other way on a season-long swap deal.
Kilmarnock brought in forward Alexei Eremenko, who has won 44 caps for Finland, on a season-long loan deal from Ukrainian side Metalist Kharkiv.
St Mirren signed left midfielder Nick Hegarty, who had been on trial with the club for several weeks following his release by Grimsby.
That move came about when Saints boss Danny Lennon gave up on a move for former Rangers forward Alan Gow, whose proposed move to Swindon then collapsed just before the English deadline.
Lennon said: "I invested a lot of time in trying to bring Alan Gow here and it looks as if he has been using us as a last resort. I want quality players here, but only if they want to be with us."
The Saints boss added: "We'll not be following up our interest in trialists Euan Holden or Christos Veletanis."
Dundee United left it late to sign Scott Severin, his arrival on a two-year contract from Watford announced after 10pm.
The Tayside club balanced the books by releasing striker Francisco Sandaza and midfielder Jennison Myrie-Williams, although they resisted further overtures from Middlesbrough for winger Craig Conway.
United did unload Damian Casalinuovo, with the 23-year-old signing a two-year contract with Hamilton after 11pm after the clubs agreed an undisclosed fee.
Lanarkshire rivals Motherwell are understood to have turned down an offer of around 200,000 from Swansea for former Scotland Under-21 centre-back Mark Reynolds, who is in the final season of his contract, while the Fir Park side released keeper Michael Fraser.
