Forsyth takes over as Scots head coach

DEREK Forsyth has been appointed Scotland senior men’s first Scots-born head coach in 16 years. The 53-year-old takes over from Englishman Russell Garcia. Since Grove Menzieshill’s Billy McPherson in 1995, Scotland has been under the coaching aegis of two Englishmen, two Australians and a German.

“I know the culture and I can instantly identify the diversifications within the culture,” said Forsyth. “Recognition, appreciation and understanding of this engenders trust and respect, which I believe are an important part of the coach’s relationship with his players.”

Glasgow-born Forsyth coached current Scottish champions Glynhill Kelburne off and on from 1991 to 2010 and led the Paisley club to ten division one titles, five Scottish Cups and three European B Championships. On the international front, the former Clydesdale and MIM player was head coach to the Scotland under 21 side between 1991 and 1998 when they came a very creditable fifth in the European Championships on two occasions.
