Cowdenbeath chairman quits

COWDENBEATH chairman Gordon McDougall has resigned, three weeks after the club's new owners sacked his son-in-law Brian Welsh from the manager's post.

McDougall said that his decision to step down after almost 19 years in charge of the club was not directly connected to the dismissal of Welsh, but he admitted his position as chairman had become "unmanageable." He added: "It is obviously a very sad moment for me to be leaving after so many enjoyable years."

Last year McDougall sold his majority shareholding in Cowdenbeath to a property development company, Innovate Cowdenbeath Ltd. He is now reviewing his position as a consultant to the club's new owners.

France decide to keep Domenech

FRANCE coach Raymond Domenech will remain in charge of the national team despite their poor performance at Euro 2008.

Domenech's side were knocked out in the group stage, prompting a meeting of the French Football Federation's Federal Council in Paris yesterday. A statement on the FFF's website read: "Raymond Domenech will continue as France's national team coach as the team prepare to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. His targets have been re-defined and his managerial responsibilities have been re-evaluated."

Manchester City get rid of Dickov

FORMER Scotland striker Paul Dickov has been released by Manchester City. Dickov, 35, had loan spells with Crystal Palace and Blackpool last season.

New City manager Mark Hughes has also released Brazilian midfielder Geovanni, Belgian striker Emile Mpenza and Roberto Mancini's son, Filippo.

Inverness take on United youngster

FORMER Manchester United youngster Sean Evans will spend a week on trial with Inverness Caley Thistle.

The 20-year-old is set to arrive at the Caledonian Stadium on Monday after being released by the Old Trafford club this summer.

"The plan is to have a look at the boy for a week and, at the same time, he can see what we are all about up here," said Inverness manager Craig Brewster.

Taouil signs new Kilmarnock deal

MEHDI Taouil has signed a new three-year contract with Kilmarnock.

The Moroccan midfielder, 25, earned the new deal after impressing manager Jim Jefferies last season. Taouil joined the Rugby Park club from French outfit Montpellier in October.

O'Neill tells Reds to pay for Barry

MARTIN O'Neill has challenged Liverpool to end the stalemate over Gareth Barry's transfer to Anfield by meeting his asking price.

"Gareth has pointed out he wants to go and if Liverpool come up and meet our valuation, he will go," said O'Neill yesterday. "That has been the case since the beginning of June when Gareth said he definitely wanted to go to Liverpool."
