Football: Mickey rolls back years to win Peter Smith Cup for Legends
MICKEY WEIR, a League Cup winner with Hibs in 1991, rolled back the years when he notched two exquisite goals at Leith Links yesterday as a team of Hibs Legends defeated East of Scotland League First Division side Leith Athletic 4-3 in front of over 600 spectators.
Weir, now 43, belied his years and his previous back problems to score in each half and he said afterwards: "I was just pleased to get through the entire 90 minutes although it's always nice to put the ball in the net."
The game was arranged as part of the Leith Festival and the cup on offer to the winners was the appropriately-named Peter Smith Memorial Cup. Peter died suddenly recently and he will always be remembered as the janitor of St Mary's Primary School who spent most of his spare time organising the school's Soccer Sevens.
Apart from Weir, the Hibs Legends also included defenders Calum Milne and Gordon Hunter along with midfielder Paul Kane and striker Graham Harvey.
However it was Leith Athletic who took the lead on the half-hour mark when captain Neil Ewart headed home a Jack Combe cross. Weir equalised when Kane picked him out with a 40-yard pass and the winger first timed a 25-yard lob over the surprised Leith goalkeeper David Duncan.
After the break Combe fired Leith ahead before Harvey equalised with a well taken penalty. Combe again put Leith in front but Craig Hume brought the Legends level and, with six minutes remaining, Weir was set up by Harvey and neatly lobbed the ball over the exposed Ian Gordon from the edge of the penalty box.
