Wolves tap university resources to develop team
THE Edinburgh Wolves gridiron team will host tryouts for a university team tomorrow from noon at the Jack Kane Centre in Edinburgh. Their aim? To be playing in the British Collegiate American Football League (BCAFL) within two years.
The Wolves, along with parent organisation the Edinburgh Gridiron Club (EGC) - who recently completed their first season in the British Senior League (BSL) Division 2 North with a 3-7 record - regard developing students as a priority to developing their grassroots level of the sport.
Wolves GM Douglas Adamson said: "There is a wealth of untapped potential among Edinburgh’s 50,000-strong student body. A university team will help to develop the sport in the Capital and hopefully develop players who, in the future, progress to the Wolves senior squad. The university population are young, bright and enthusiastic and fit the sporting profile beautifully."
The team will be coached by Wolves star David ‘Magic’ Molloy, who recently served as offensive coordinator in the North-South Showcase, an end of season showdown featuring the best players from around the BSL.
Molloy encouraged all students interested in sport to give it a go, saying: "Even if you’ve never thought about trying American football, we can give you all the training you need. It’s a lot of fun and there are great opportunities."
