Thomson on course for Rangers return

RANGERS midfielder Kevin Thomson is hoping to be fit for the start of the new Clydesdale Bank Premier League season.

The 24-year-old has been out of action since suffering a cruciate injury back in November.

Having missed the majority of Rangers' double-winning campaign, it was feared he could also miss the the start of the new term.

But Thomson is hoping for good news when he sees a specialist tomorrow.

"My fitness is good," he said. "I've been in over the summer while the other boys have been on holiday and so far so good.

"I'm just hoping to get through the next month without any problems and hopefully see if I'm good for the start of the season."

Asked if he will be fit enough by then, he added: "I think so – that's been the plan all along. It's been just over seven months.

"I go down to see to the specialist tomorrow for a final check-up. Fingers crossed it will be a nice hand shake and I'll be able to move on and get back playing."

Thomson is confident he will be back to his best but admits to fearing for his career when he first sustained the injury.

"My main priority is to get back playing," he said.

"It's a worry for anyone when you get an injury. You fear you might not play again and I had that fear at the start of my injury.

"When you are a footballer and it's all you've ever done and it gets taken away from you, it's a hard thing.

"I've done a lot of work with the physios and I'm pretty sure I'll be knocking on the door come pre-season."

Thomson was forced to look on from the sidelines as Rangers clinched the SPL title and Homecoming Scottish Cup in a dramatic climax to the season.

"It's been difficult," he admitted.

"Especially at the end of the season when the boys had so much success and it was hard sitting on the sidelines.

"I just had to stay focused. Obviously I was willing the boys on to do well but, if you ask any player who isn't involved, they will tell you its difficult.

"But the boys did well and I was delighted for them and hopefully I can get a taste of it next year."
