Scotland women draw with England in Cyprus Cup

SCOTLAND coach Anna Signeul was full of praise for her players after a thrilling 4-4 draw against strong favourites England in the Cyprus Cup.

Both sides took the lead twice as the game ebbed and flowed wildly, but substitute Emma Mitchell’s goal eight minutes from time ensured a fair outcome. “Every player worked really hard,” said Signeul.

“There was much more energy and we closed England down really well.”

The Swede singled out Kim Little, who had been doubtful on Thursday night, for special praise. The Arsenal midfielder played in an advanced role, and responded with a goal and two assists.

“I have never seen her play as well as she did today,” said Signeul. “She was absolutely fantastic, but so were all the players.”

Scotland went ahead after 18 minutes, and it was the two players who were unable to train on Thursday who provided the breakthrough. Little’s clever through ball was converted by Lisa Evans. Scotland’s good work was undone when they lost two goals near the end of the first period. Ellen White got the first, and Toni Duggan the second in injury time.

Eight minutes into the second half, Scotland were ahead again. Jane Ross equalised from close range in 48 minutes with Little putting her side 3-2 ahead five minutes later. Rachel Williams equalised in the 73rd minute, and four minutes later Kelly Smith followed up to make it 4-3. Then, with eight minutes remaining Mitchell restored parity for the Scots.
