Scotland welcome Wales to Hampden tonight looking for revenge after October’s 2-1 World Cup qualifying defeat in Cardiff. Here, we look at some memorable Glasgow meetings between the two sides.

(March 1876, Hamilton Crescent)

Scotland welcomed the Welsh to Partick as the visitors from the Principality made their first appearance on the international stage just weeks after the formation of the Football Association of Wales. It proved to be a painful lesson for the rookie Dragons, though, as goals by John Ferguson, James Lang, Billy MacKinnon and Henry McNeil confirmed an easy win. The match also saw Moses McNeil – one of Rangers’ founding fathers – make his Scotland debut.

(November 1949, Hampden)

This Home International clash also doubled as the first World Cup qualifier to be played in Scotland. Celtic’s John McPhail scored the opener before a second from Clyde centre-forward Alex Linwood confirmed the win. Scotland went on to finish second in their four-team group behind England but the SFA refused to send a team to the finals in Brazil as they were not British champions.

(November 1976, Hampden)

An Ian Evans own goal gave Scotland a narrow win in their qualifying clash for the 1978 World Cup and put them on track for the finals in Argentina. However, it would take another two goals from Don Masson and Kenny Dalglish at Anfield in the reverse fixture 11 months later before Ally MacLeod’s men could confirm their seats on the plane to South America.

(February 1984, Hampden)

The Home Internationals tournament was axed in 1984 as crowded fixture lists and worries over hooliganism forced Scotland and England to withdraw. The final meeting of the Scots and their Welsh cousins saw a home win at Hampden, as Davie Cooper and Mo Johnston struck either side of Robbie James’ goal for the visitors.

(May 1997, Rugby Park)

The last meeting of the teams on Scottish soil saw John Hartson’s goal give the Welsh a 1-0 success – the Dragons’ first triumph north of the border since 1985. Scotland boss Craig Brown gave debuts to five players that night – Neil Sullivan, David Weir, Christian Dailly, Brian McAllister and Simon Donnelly – while his Welsh counterpart, Bobby Gould, experimented by handing first caps to Paul Jones, Paul Trollope, Lee Jones and Simon Haworth.
