Scotland v Wales is “wooden spoon” clash

Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage has branded his country’s World Cup qualifier against Scotland at Hampden tomorrow a wooden spoon clash.

The two home nations have little chance of catching runaway Group A joint-leaders Belgium and Croatia to reach next summer’s finals in Brazil.

Wales are just one point above Gordon Strachan’s basement side courtesy of their win in Cardiff in October that pushed former Scotland manager Craig Levein towards the exit door.

With the pacesetters both 
sitting comfortably on ten points, former Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City player Savage insists both countries are only fighting for pride.

He said: “As a Welshman, the only significant thing is that it’s Gordon Strachan’s first competitive game for Scotland.

“Every time you play for your country it’s massive but let’s 
not get carried away, look at the situation both countries are in, it’s about who is going to finish bottom of the group at the minute.

“Scotland have the better group of players but if you look at individuals, look what Wales have.

“You have Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsay.

“Up front, if you take out Craig Bellamy; Simon Church, Morison, Hal Robson-Kanu and Sam Vokes are not going to set international football alight. That’s the massive problem.

“If you look at Wales, down the years they’ve either had a great midfield, a great defence or great forwards and they’ve never combined that into a team.”
