Scotland’s poor form could scupper chances for Euro 2016
The bad news keeps coming for Craig Levein
Scotland’s run of abysmal results could already have ruined their chances of qualifying for the 2016 European championships.
The finals, due to be held in France, will see the hosts qualify automatically, while 23 slots will be up for grabs as the other nations will battle it out.
It is thought that the qualifying stages for the new 24-team set-up will consist of nine groups, however Scotland’s previous UEFA ranking saw them sit at 27th.
But given their recent poor run of results, along with the improvement in sides like Belgium who were previously below Scotland, it is likely that the next rankings will see the Scots drop further.
A drop in UEFA rankings could mean Scotland will be demoted to the fourth pot of seeds when the qualifying fixtures are drawn in March 2014.
Unless Scotland’s results improve, they could be left out in the cold when the dust settles after the 52 nations all compete for a slot in Euro 2016.
