LOTHAR Matthaus has spoken for the first time about replacing Craig Levein as Scotland manager following speculation that the German World Cup winner would be among the candidates under consideration by the SFA.

Matthaus, who is Germany’s most capped player of all time with 150 senior appearances, has been linked to the Scotland job since the weekend, but has now declared his interest in discussing the vacancy with Scottish football’s top brass.

Since ending his glittering playing career in 2000, Matthaus has had spells as coach of Rapin Vienna, Partizan Belgrade, Atletico Paranaense, Red Bull Salzburg and Maccabi Netanya. Hungary and Bulgaria.

“My management has been in contact with the Scottish FA,” Matthaus said. “My name is known in Scotland. We haven’t had any specific talks yet, but Scotland is a football-loving country, and this would be an interesting challenge. I expect to be back working as a manager in January.

“Already, I have some interesting proposals from clubs and countries, but let’s wait and see.”
