KIRK Broadfoot believes leaving Rangers for Blackpool could boost his bid to get back into the Scotland squad.

The 28-year-old right-back, who spent five years at Ibrox, agreed to terminate his Rangers contract this week and subsequently agreed a one-year deal at Bloomfield Road.

Yesterday, Broadfoot revealed that he feared that life in the Third Division with Rangers would harm his chances of an international recall.

“Getting back into the Scotland set-up played a big part in my decision to come here,” said Broadfoot who has made four international appearances. “If I had stayed at Rangers in the Third Division I doubt I’d have got into the Scotland squad.”

Broadfoot now hopes that pushing for promotion to the Premier League with Blackpool will help him to catch the eye of Scotland manager Craig Levein.

“Getting into the Premier League with Blackpool is the plan for me,” added Broadfoot.
“I almost signed here when they were in the Premier League. But watching the Championship from afar the standard looks very high.

“When teams from this division play Premier League sides in cups there doesn’t seem to be that big a gap. The Championship is technically very good.

“My friend, Charlie Adam, was here and everyone couldn’t speak highly enough of the club when I’ve asked them.”

Broadfoot is looking forward to working with Blackpool manager Ian Holloway and he said: “The manager attracted me here. Speaking to the manager last week, I was just blown away with him. Blackpool has something special about it. It just seems to have this aura.

“Everyone seems to enjoy themselves here and I wanted to be a part of that. I’m delighted to be here. I’ve always wanted to play down south and I can’t wait.”
