Jambo girls clinch South East title

Hearts WOMEN clinched the regionalised SWFL Second Division South East title when they thrashed Football Club of Edinburgh 10-1 at Forester Park.

The Jambos, who also won the divisional League Cup earlier in the season, can now win promotion to the First Division if they successfully navigate the play-offs against the other regional winners.

“It’s been a fantastic season,” said club spokesperson Margaret Milne. “The play-offs will be a great challenge for the players, one that I’m sure they will rise to, just as they have throughout the campaign.

“To score 109 and concede just five goals in the league tells its own story.

“The season is far from over, but we are already thinking ahead, irrespective of how our remaining ties unfold.”

Meanwhile in the SWPL, Spartans lost by the odd goal in five against Forfar Farmington despite putting on a brave performance at Ainslie Park.

Spartans led 2-1 at the interval through goals by Diana Barry and Sarah Ewens, only for a second-half red card for Trisha McLaughlin to prove costly as Forfar hit back.

The winning goal came in time added on when the visitors snatched all three points as Aimee Godfrey struck to complete her hat-trick.

Coach Debbi McCulloch said: “The girls played extremely well, passing with pace and creating movement off the ball. We scored two very well worked goals and had more than our fair share of possession.

“However, luck was against us and we lost a couple of soft goals which ultimately cost us the win and the three points.“

Elsewhere, Hutchison Vale defeated Kilmarnock 6-2 to keep the pressure on Hamilton Academical in the race to finish top of the bottom six. But boss Ian McDonald believes his side let their standards drop.

McDonald said: “We came for the three points so we should be pleased. However, it was still a disappointing performance.

“I cannot put my finger on why our performance levels dropped. Nevertheless, it was encouraging to see the goals spread around the team and it is pleasing to still have something to play for going into the final two games of the campaign.”

Hibernian Ladies dropped from second to fourth in the table after a humiliating 8-1 thrashing by champions Glasgow City at Albyn Park, Broxburn.
