Highland League: Formartine top but not satisfied

Stuart Smith admits some of Formartine’s worst form of the season has taken them top of the Highland League.

Steve Paterson’s side edged to the summit after maintaining their 100 per cent home record with a 3-1 win over Fraserburgh on Saturday – and their fourth straight victory has given them a strong advantage in the championship race, taking level on points with Cove but with three games in hand.

However, Smith said: “It has been a great four results, but I don’t think we’ve played well in any of the four games. Winning those matches in hand will be the key.”

Smith was the villain as Formartine opened disastrously. After just four minutes, his woefully short back-pass was snapped up by Peter-Alexander Bruce who knocked the ball home. Formartine, though, levelled after 22 minutes with a Kevin Webster penalty and, after the break, Callum Dingwall and Mike Ewen sealed the win.
