A full house at Tynecastle generated a great atmosphere as the teams ran out but it turned sour when some Hibs fans interrupted a minute's silence for former Jambos captain George Miller, who recently died aged 69.
The game opened at a frenetic pace and the breaking Christian Nade had an early shot deflected wide seconds after Hearts had cleared a corner.
Hibs goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay made the game's first save in the eighth minute when he beat Driver's powerful shot past his near post, although the strike looked like it was going wide.
Christophe Berra produced a crucial block on Chris Hogg at the other end as Derek Riordan's free-kick into the box fell for the stand-in skipper.
The first real threat came in the 16th minute when Nade headed Robbie Neilson's long throw against the bar.
The visitors created their serious first chance midway through the half when Stevenson laid the ball off for Fletcher, who blasted high and wide from 16 yards.

John Rankin, Colin Nish and Dean Shiels all dropped to the bench.
Hearts brought in Jason Thomson and Eggert Jonsson for the suspended Marius Zaliukas and Lee Wallace, who were both sent off in last weekend's 1-0 defeat at Aberdeen.
