Forres Mechanics in talks over safety of cup tie venue in wake of Rangers draw
TALKS will take place today between Forres Mechanics, the police and local authority officials to decide whether Mosset Park – capacity 1,476 – is fit to host Rangers next month, after the Highland League champions landed the plum draw in the second round of the William Hill Scottish Cup yesterday.
Forres Mechanics, nicknamed the Can Cans, were drawn out against the Glasgow giants, now playing in the Third Division, when former Ibrox midfielder Trevor Steven and SFA president Campbell Ogilvie made the draw yesterday. Rangers have made a nervy start to life in the bottom tier of the Scottish Football League, scrambling to draws against Peterhead and Berwick Rangers. A trip to Forres would be tough, but the club may be forced to switch the match to a bigger venue, possibly Inverness’s Caledonian Stadium.
Forres club secretary David Macdonald said: “I’m delighted and still in a state of shock. Obviously Rangers are still a very strong team but anything is possible in the cup.”
