Foreign football round-up: Juventus bandwagon rolls on with win at Catania
JUVENTUS continued their unbeaten start to this season’s Serie A campaign by notching up a 1-0 win over Catania yesterday.
They were made to work for it in Sicily, however, Arturo Vidal’s second-half strike doing just enough to see off the hosts.
Big-spending PSG were also given a stern examination as they moved three points clear at the top of France’s Ligue 1. They were reliant on a 73rd minute goal by Zlatan Ibrahimovic as Nancy, who lie in the bottom three, proved difficult opponents to break down. Second-placed Marseille were due to face Lyon last night, but their match at the Stade Velodrome was called off because of high winds.
Barcelona dusted off the cobwebs of their tough clash with Celtic by dishing out a 5-0 hammering to Rayo Vallecano. Lionel Messi scored a double, while David Villa, Cesc Fabregas and Xavi also got on the scoresheet. Their nearest challengers, Atletico Madrid, were in fine form, defeating Osasuna 3-1 at the Vicente Calderon, with the prolific Falcao among the scorers.
There was a shock result, however, in the German Bundesliga, with Bayern Munich losing 2-1 at home to Bayer Leverkusen. Mario Mandzukic’s equaliser looked to have got a point for the hosts but Sidney Sam scored a late winner, though Bayern still remain top.
