Football news in brief: Easton’s first senior goal nets an award

Livingston’s Dylan Easton, 18, has only ever scored one senior goal however his counter in their Scottish Communities League Cup 3-2 success over Dumbarton was good enough to be chosen as the first winner of the SFL Goal of the Month competition this season.

Easton struck in extra time with a low right-foot shot from the edge of the box after a 14-pass move involving five players was voted as the best

by the media panel.

Mitchell plays it cool over Redknapp role

Bournemouth chairman Eddie Mitchell is refusing to be drawn about suggestions Harry Redknapp could take charge of the club, even if just on a caretaker basis. The League One club are looking for a new manager after parting company with Paul Groves and his assistant Shaun Brooks and former Tottenham boss Redknapp recently returned to the south-coast club in an advisory role. Mitchell said; “Harry knows my feelings but I can’t say much more than that.”

Deschamps snubs Nasri for Spain tie

France coach Didier Deschamps felt it was not “the right time” to recall Samir Nasri after his three-match suspension. Nasri was handed the sanction by the French Football Federation for abusing a journalist at Euro 2012. Deschamps has opted to extend Nasri’s exile and instead chose Toulouse midfielder Moussa Sissoko and Lassana Diarra for the friendly against Japan and the World Cup tie with Spain.

Uefa to investigate Montpellier coach

Montpellier coach Rene Girard has been charged with “improper conduct” by Uefa after an incident during Wednesday’s 2-2 draw at Schalke 04 in the Champions League. Girard, who had an exchange with Schalke coach Huub Stevens and was seen to make a gesture with his finger at his rival, will face a hearing on 9 October, Uefa said in a statement. Montpellier have also been charged after their fans set off fireworks.

Woolnough laid to rest in Surrey

Leading figures from football, journalism and broadcasting paid their respects at the funeral of Daily Star chief

sports writer Brian Woolnough in Esher, Surrey yesterday. Woolnough, who also worked at the Sun for 27 years and was the host of Sunday Supplement on Sky Sports from 2007, last month lost his battle against bowel cancer, aged 63. Woolnough leaves wife Linda, three children and two grandchildren.
