Falkirk 4 - 1 Forfar Athletic: Weatherston wins claim for vital goal

Squad squabbles are generally not to be welcomed, but when the light-hearted in-fighting is simply over who scored a pivotal goal in a Scottish Cup victory that earned a quarter-final berth then there will be little to concern Falkirk manager Steven Pressley.

The argument blew up around the Bairns’ second goal as they denied Forfar what some predicted could be the shock of the round. Stewart Murdoch headed in Sean Higgins’ 68th-minute corner to give Falkirk a 2-1 advantage before David Weatherston and Lyle Taylor added gloss late on.

However, Taylor, who had opened the scoring with his 21st goal of the campaign, swung a boot at Murdoch’s effort as it crossed the line and, like any predator, claimed the kill and what would have been a fourth hat-trick for the club.

“Lyle’s trying to claim it because that would be another match ball for him,” said Murdoch. “But I told him I’ll fight him for it if he wants it!”

Forfar were as bright as their incandescent orange strips and their equaliser, an Iain Campbell penalty after Chris Templeman had been brought down, swelled confidence, only for Falkirk’s second-half rally to see off the Second Division part-timers.

“After last season, where we did get a few decent results – we beat Rangers and Dundee United – you get a taste for it and you want more,” added Murdoch. “We’re delighted to get the win but we’ll see how the next round goes.”
