The scoreline suggests that the game was one-sided. The scoreline is absolutely correct. From the moment the Costa Rican defence failed to deal with the cross Tenorio headed into their goal, Ecuador were comfortable, even if Costa Rica managed the occasional sally. Delgado's brilliant finish from a tight angle made the rest of the game a formality. Towards the end, Solis made a great run but Costa Rica's day was summed up when it was greeted with a great save. Finally, Mendez's ball was met by Kaviedes beautiful stretching finish.
Hero
Mendez's ball in for Kaviedes's goal was particularly fine.
Villain
It would have been more interesting if the Costa Rican attack had had their shooting boots on. And the midfield had functioned. And if the defence had ... you get the idea.
What have we learned?
Ecuador, who progress beyond the group stages for the first time, continue to improve.
