East of Scotland League: Students fight back to take capital derby spoils

Edinburgh University recovered from trailing by two goals at half-time to stage a second half comeback and win 4-2 in their Central Taxis Premier Division clash with Edinburgh City at Meadowbank Stadium.

Douglas Gair gave City the lead from the penalty spot before Shaun Harrison netted with a 25 yard free kick. Early in the second half the University head coach, Douglas Samuel, made a triple substitution and immediately Mike Gray headed home before Mark Gair and Dan Ward edged the students ahead. Gray completed the scoring with a 35 yard lob in the final minute.

Gretna 2008 left Edinburgh with all three points after their 4-2 victory against Leith Athletic. John Johnstone, David Renyard, Joe Slattery and Dear Rea scored for Gretna while William Bremner notched a double for Leith. In the First Division, leaders Preston Athletic beat Hawick Royal Albert 7-1 with goals from Frazer Henderson (three), Sean Martin, John Kerr, Bryan Wilson and a trialist after Craig Beattie had given Hawick the lead. Gala Fairydean beat Berwick Rangers Reserves 3-0 with strikes from Grant Gass (two) and Jack Hay.

In the SFA South Region Challenge Cup, Lothian Thistle beat Eyemouth United 7-0, Threave Rovers defeated Vale of Leithen 2-1, the students of Stirling Univeristy overcame St Cuthbert Wanderers 3-2 and Duns beat Heston 4-2 after extra time.
