Artur Boruc under investigation over allegation of throwing bottle at fans
SOUTHAMPTON have launched a formal investigation into allegations that goalkeeper Artur Boruc threw a water bottle at fans during their home defeat by Tottenham.
The club was also looking into claims that the 32-year-old former Celtic player swore at supporters after conceding a second goal in his home debut in Sunday’s 2-1 Barclays Premier League defeat at St Mary’s.
Several reports suggested Saints had studied video evidence and decided Boruc had no case to answer but they said in a statementyesterday: “Southampton Football Club can confirm that it is investigating allegations of an incident involving Artur Boruc that occurred towards the end of the first half during Sunday’s match against Tottenham Hotspur. The club takes such allegations extremely seriously and will deal with the matter in the appropriate manner.”
It is believed Boruc faces severe sanctions if found guilty. Statements by stewards have been received and it is understood Southampton will conclude their probe by the end of the week.
Former Poland goalkeeper Boruc joined Saints as a free agent last month after leaving Fiorentina in the summer. He courted controversy during his Celtic career, particularly at Old Firm games due to gestures to Rangers fans and his habit of blessing himself before matches.
Nigel Adkins was asked about the apparent altercation at the end of the Tottenham game, but told reporters: “Pass, I am totally unaware of it. I am not aware of any incident going on.”
Boruc, who won 46 caps, spent five years with Celtic, who signed him from Legia Warsaw, and he became a favourite with the Parkhead fans.
His popularity heightened when he saved a last-minute penalty by Manchester United’s Louis Saha to secure a 1-0 Champions League win and clinch Celtic’s place in the knock-out phase.
He was sold to Fiorentina in July 2010.
