Aberdeen destroyed in Germany

Bor Moenchengladbach 5 Rupp 19; Leckie 46, 76; Hankle 71, 73 Aberdeen 2 Magennis 11; Pawlett 86

ABERDEEN endured a calamitous pre-season defeat in Germany, with midfielder Rob Milsom's late sending-off compounding their woe.

Craig Brown's side were crushed in a devastating five-minute spell in the second half when they lost three goals and made it a debut to forget for new goalkeeper David Gonzalez.

While the Columbian could not be held responsible for any of the goals, he knows that he and his team-mates must tighten up before the start of the season. Gonzalez said: "I didn't want to make a debut like this but I need to forget it. We need to get over this and look to the next match. You could say it wasn't my fault but I wanted to avoid the score being 5-2 so it frustrates me.

"Borussia showed they are a good team but we need to try and be stronger. An inability to keep possession of the ball is what killed us."

For all that they ended up on the wrong end of a hammering, Aberdeen actually made a memorable start when Josh Magennis netted from fully 45 yards after 11 minutes when goalkeeper Marc-Andre Tev Stegem sliced the ball to him.

However, Lukas Rupp made it 1-1 at the interval, and Aberdeen were taken apart in the second half

Matthew Leckie made it 2-1 just a minute after the re-start before Mike Hankle netted an offside-looking goal before scoring from the spot after a soft penalty award. Leckie made it 5-1 before Peter Pawlett netted a late consolation. Milson's unnecessary injury-time red card – shown for two bookings – capped a miserable day for Brown, who put a brave face on the defeat. He said: "They are a Bundesliga side who are two weeks ahead of us in training so I am not too despondent."

Borussia: Ter Stagen, Daems, Rupp, Bobadilla, De Gamargo, Neustadter, Marx, Levels, Obsu, Dante, Stranzl.

Aberdeen: Gonzalez, Foster, Considine, Mawene, Clark, Robertson, Osbourne, Fyvie, Paton, Magennis, Mackie
