Shaun Maloney and Steven Whittaker have been called up to the Scotland squad for Tuesday’s friendly match against Denmark at Hampden.

Hull City midfielder Maloney was expected to be out of action until April after suffering an ankle injury in training with the English Championship club earlier this month. But Scotland manager Gordon Strachan has asked the player to join the squad in preparation for the Denmark fixture and, after a quicker-than-expected recovery, he’s in line to win cap No 46.

Whittaker was initially in Strachan’s first squad which travelled to Prague and beat the Czech Republic 1-0 on Thursday night but he withdrew – to be replaced by Paul Caddis – because his wife was due to give birth. Whittaker, who plays in defence for Norwich City, is now available and joins up with the squad hoping to make his 31st international appearance. Caddis, the Birmingham City full-back, also remains with the squad.
