Scott Brown has retired from international football after reasoning that he cannot perform to a high standard consistency if he must represent both Celtic and Scotland.

It brings to an end the career of a divisive player in the eyes of Scottish football fans. Some see him as a top class talent, a player who could easily have starred in the English top flight had he wished to travel south. Others believe he is wildly overrated, and that he didn’t do much to improve the nation’s fortunes at the international stage.

Therefore, it was no surprise reaction was somewhat mixed on social media. Here is selection of the best responses to the news.

WHAT HIS SUPPORTERS SAID

@JamesNotThatOne: “Gutted that Broony has retired from Scotland. Hopefully someone like McArthur, McDonald or McGinn can stake a claim.”

@pieandbov: “In the navy blue of our country I’ve loved watching Scott Brown. Never gave anything less than 100%, never went hiding.”

@malcolmcannon62: “Sad to see Scott Brown retire from Scotland duty but proud to say I was there for his 50th and final cap. Good luck Broony. #legend”

@sonnyswanson159: “One thing Scotland are going to miss about Scott Brown is his heart and fight canny take that away from the laddie.”

@jackmorton26: “Don’t know why people are buzzing about Scott Brown retiring, he’s probably one of our best players.”

WHAT HIS CRITICS SAID

@RFin72: “Good. Now replace him with someone who has a bit of dignity and class.”

@SGMilne: “In games for Scotland, Scott Brown wasn’t protected by referees, and so he wasn’t as effective as he is for Celtic.”

@Jonnyrmcfarlane: “A guy who can’t find a 10 yard pass isn’t a great loss in possession-centric world of international Fitba.”

@michaelwight: “Scott Brown won’t be a big miss for Scotland. Forces Strachan’s to actually play someone who is better as we have plenty of players who are.”

@RobbieBlair72: “Scott Brown announcing his international retirement significantly increases Scotland’s chances qualifying for the next World Cup.”

WHAT OUR JOURNALISTS SAID

@NeilCameron5: “From Brown’s point of view, it’s probably the right decision. I remain available for selection.”

@DouglasBarrie: “Maybe this is the catalyst Gordon Strachan needs for bringing in new blood and building the team around someone else.”

@pwmcomms: “Big player, a loss without doubt. However I think it speaks volumes about what he thinks about qualification chances.”

THE JOKES

@Oldfirmfacts1: “Scott Brown has retired from international football, just days after reversing his decision to retire from club football 12 months in.”

@Krisman20: “I see Scott Brown has retired from Scotland duty to concentrate on his new career as head of the SFA disciplinary panel.”

@johnnyfitba: “Exceptional trolling by Scott Brown, waiting until he’s played well for the first time in three years to retire from Scotland duty. A+++”

@SartoMutiny: “I thought he retired around 2011 to be honest.”

@Bowcat77: “There is no Scott Brown.”
