Rangers can clinch the League One title and promotion to the second tier of Scottish football if they defeat Airdrieonians at Ibrox on Wednesday.
Following Dunfermline Athletic’s goalless draw with Stenhousemuir yesterday, a home win at Ibrox would leave the Fife club unable catch Ally McCoist’s side, who remain unbeaten in the league after 27 matches. The title win has long seemed a formality but can now be wrapped up in midweek with eight games remaining.
Rangers were demoted to the bottom tier of Scottish football after liquidation in 2012 but will almost certainly play in the Championship next season as they seek to return to the top flight in time for season 2015-16.
McCoist has a more pressing matter before that, with this afternoon’s Scottish Cup quarter-final tie against Albion Rovers at Ibrox. McCoist has never taken his team to the last four of a major domestic competition but, a massive upset apart, he should end that run today.
The draw for the semi-finals will take place at Ibrox at the conclusion of today’s match.
