Supporters have presented Hibs club with a bronze bust of the club’s first captain, Michael Whelahan.

The St Paul’s Hibernian Supporters Club have previously raised funds for a bust of Canon Edward Hannan who, along with Whelahan, established Hibs in the area around the Cowgate which was known as “little Ireland.”

Now the 80 members of St Paul’s have done likewise to have an image of Whelahan, the great-great uncle of Hibs legend Pat Stanton, cast to gift to the club just in time for its 140th anniversary on August 6.

Brothers Ian and Derek Hollingdale, chairman and vice-chairman of St Paul’s, presented the bust, sculpted, as was that of Hannan, by fellow fan Lewis Dougan, to chief executive Leeann Dempster who expressed her delight at having two such influential figures in the club’s history now on display them side-by-side in the foyer of Easter Road.
