Hearts are likely to make a second offer for Dundee United’s John Souttar after an initial approach was knocked back by the Tannadice club, according to the Edinburgh Evening News.
The 19-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season so Hearts are free to open contract negotiations with the player over a summer move.
However, United would be due compensation for the player if he signed a pre-contract, and a fee could be set by a tribunal if the clubs cannot agree terms.
Hearts have tried to bypass those troubles with an offer of over £100,000, which was rejected by the Dundee United board. The Tynecastle side are now expected to come back with an improved offer.
Celtic have also been credited with an interest in the defender, along with a number of clubs down south.
