Whitehill WELFARE beat Edinburgh University 2-1 in a Central Taxis Premier Division game which moved the Rosewell club to within a point of second-placed Stirling University with two games in hand, although they are still nine points behind leaders, Spartans.
Michael Bruce opened the scoring for Whitehill after 12 minutes before Scott McCulloch’s header doubled their lead on the half-hour mark.
However, the students gradually came to grips with the game and, seconds before half time, Cyrus Moosavi hit home an unstoppable dipping volley.
Despite their pressure in the second half, the students could not find an equaliser and are now in a relegation battle.
Edinburgh City were due to play Gretna 2008 in a League Cup first round tie, but, after the Gretna team bus broke down en route to Meadowbank, the game was switched to a Premier Division fixture to avoid the prospect of extra-time late in the evening, as the match eventually kicked off at 8.30pm.
Gretna took an early lead through Sergio Roya Ocha before Dougie Gair equalised from the penalty spot. The game ended 1-1, despite Gretna having Adam McMath and Lee Underwood sent off.
In the First Division, Craigroyston moved into third with a 2-1 win over Ormiston, Peebles Rovers beat Selkirk 2-1 and leaders Coldstream were held to a 0-0 draw by Duns.
Tonight, Leith Athletic play Easthouses Lily at Riccarton in the First Division with a 7.30pm kick-off.
