Stars of the ’70s: No 2, Kenny Dalglish
Kenny Dalglish in action for Celtic
WHEN 15-year-old Kenny Dalglish heard that Celtic assistant manager Sean Fallon was at the front door of his Govan home, he ran upstairs to pull all the Rangers posters off his bedroom wall.
The striker had helped Scottish Schools go undefeated in a home nations Victory Shield tournament, although he had started out as a goalkeeper.
He made his Celtic debut as a substitute in 1968 and scored his first goal, a penalty, in a 2-0 League Cup win over Rangers at Ibrox in 1971. Under Jock Stein, Dalglish won four First Division titles, four Scottish Cups and one League Cup and became club captain. He made 320 appearances, scoring 167 goals for Celtic before a British record £440,000 move to Liverpool in 1977. He won a record 102 caps for Scotland and remains the joint top scorer, alongside Denis Law, with 30 goals.
