Dundee-born Cox grew up a Dark Blues supporter and went on to wear the shirt over 400 times from 1956 to 1968.

After playing for local youth team Dundee Osborne, Willie Thornton signed Cox and the left back made his debut in a 3-1 Dens Park win over Queen’s Park, on 20 October 1956. When Bob Shankly took the reins at Dens talented youngsters like Ian Ure, Andy Penman and Alan Gilzean were given their chance and in 1962 Cox captained the side to the club’s only league championship. On their way to the title they famously beat eventual runners-up Rangers 5-1 at Ibrox. The following season Cox’s men embarked on a thrilling run in the European Cup, reaching a semi-final against AC Milan. Crucially, Cox was injured for the San Siro leg and Dundee were denied a place in the Wembley final.

When Dens was redeveloped the Provost Road end became The Bobby Cox stand. He died aged 76 in February 2010.
