Return of the prodigal Daniel Cousin imminent
RANGERS expect to have the signing of old boy Daniel Cousin wrapped up by the beginning of the week.
The Gabon international flew into Scotland yesterday and watched from the stand as the defending champions defeated Dunfermline 4-1 at East End Park, but while the striker is expected to train with the squad tomorrow, Ally McCoist revealed that some documentation remains outstanding.
“We are still waiting on some paperwork to come through, I think it is from the Gabon FA. I am told it will be here at the beginning of the week, tomorrow or Tuesday, but Daniel will come in and train. As yet he hasn’t signed but I am very hopeful we can get that paperwork and get it done.”
It would be a boost for Rangers if that signing is completed, according to Lee McCulloch. He played alongside Cousin during the striker’s first stint at the club and said that he was regarded as one of the best “all-round” forwards at the time, making 27 starts and scoring 13 goals.
Manager McCoist described him as a real “physical presence”. “But we have got options. Aluko can give us something different in the hole and Mervan [Celik] came on and gets the ball, gets fouls, has a shot at goal and could have scored before Salim [Kerkar]. And, David Healy has got a real poacher’s goal. Hopefully it will give us one or two options in that position.”
Despite his age, Cousin, who got a goal and a red card the last time he played for the Govan club, in a 4-2 win over Celtic on 31 August 2008, is hellbent on helping Rangers to the title and having another tilt at the Champions League. Fresh from impressing with Gabon in the Africa Nations Cup, he said he was ready to return to Scottish football.
“Thirty-five is young and I am healthy, I’m very happy to be back. I love Scotland and Glasgow,” added Cousin. “I want to play well for Rangers.”
