Former Hibs captain Ian Murray has been appointed manager of Dumbarton.

The 31-year-old was released by Hibs at the end of last season, after returning from a long lay-off caused by a hip problem. The former Rangers player subsequently spent some time in the USA looking to continue his playing career, but has now moved into management with the First Division’s bottom side.

He said: “There are a lot of guys I played against becoming managers like Paul Hartley, Paul Sheerin, Colin Cameron and Steven Pressley so to get a chance in the First Division is an excellent opportunity for me.

“The aim has to be to keep the club in the First Division. It will be a tough ask as the league table doesn’t lie. It’s a part-time team in a full-time league but I am not daunted by the challenge.”

Dumbarton chief executive Gilbert Lawrie said: “Ian’s playing background together with his burning desire to succeed as a manager fits perfectly with our own views.”

Murray will take over from caretaker boss Jack Ross, who will act as his assistant, after tomorrow’s clash at Dunfermline.
