Stars of the ‘90s, No 11: Istvan Kozma

INDUCTED into Dunfermline’s hall of fame earlier this month, the Hungarian remains a legendary figure in the eyes of the East End Park faithful.

Signed in September 1989 from Bordeaux for a club record fee of £540,00, the midfielder quickly made an impact, scoring a memorable hat-trick in a 5-1 win over St Mirren while his all-round intelligent play inspired Dunfermline to briefly reach the top of the Premier Division.

In all he played 103 times and scored nine goals for the Pars, won 13 of his 40 caps for Hungary while at the club and helped them to their first major final since the 1960s when they lost 2-0 to Hibs in the 1991 League Cup final. It wasn’t to last though and with the Pars heading for relegation, Kozma left in February 1992 when he was a shock £300,000 purchase for Graeme Souness’s Liverpool.
