RANGERS fans have given the go-ahead to renaming Ibrox.
Owner Charles Green has stated the club are on the verge of agreeing a sponsorship deal for the iconic stadium, writes Mark Walker.
At a fans forum meeting on Friday night with a broad range of Rangers supporters’ representatives, Green was given the all-clear to sell the naming rights – as long as Ibrox is included in the name. More than 300 fans attended the meeting and Green said: “I am very pleased and heartened by the supporters’ approach to this issue and we will take things forward as soon as possible.”
Rangers manager Ally McCoist gave a cautious welcome to the development. He said: “I am not sure it is an acceptable trade-off but it would be the least I would be looking for.
“I am reasonably open-minded about the whole thing. There is a big part of the traditionalist in me, which would say ‘leave it alone’, but I understand there’s an opportunity to raise income. I think the most important thing is that the fans’ views are taken on board because it really is such a controversial topic.”
