PARTICK Thistle showed last night that they are not quite ready to shake off the “Great Unpredictable” tag that has followed them for decades, as just six days after thumping closest challengers Dunfermline 5-1 to top the First Division by three points they went down 1-0 at New Douglas Park to give Hamilton a first home win of the season.
Hamilton Accies - Smith 41 og
The defeat was largely self-inflicted with goalkeeper Graeme Smith, who was brought in on a short term deal this week as Scott Fox was injured, scoring the game’s only goal and Paul Paton being dismissed as they battled for a leveller.
Thistle began to warm up and seven minutes from half-time they were denied a penalty when Kris Doolan was pulled to the ground by Jonathan Page as he looked to connect with a low Aaron Sinclair cross.
Hamilton made the most of that reprieve by taking the lead on 41 minutes in a moment that debutant Smith will want to forget. Ali Crawford fired over a corner from the left that was just scrambled clear for another flag kick and when this one was curled towards the near post, Smith inadvertently punched the ball into his own net.
Thistle came out for the second half looking a different side and within the opening ten minutes Chris Erskine and Sinclair, twice, had created danger on the left although their cross balls found no takers.
Despite their pressure and Thistle were almost dealt another self-inflicted blow on the hour mark when Smith again made a mess of a Crawford corner, however this time the ball was cleared off his line.
Thistle started to lay siege to the home goal but Hamilton were throwing themselves in the way of their efforts to get level with goalkeeper Kevin Cuthbert and Mickey Devlin combining to keep out a Ross Forbes effort. Frustration then appeared to get the better of the Jags with Paul Paton receiving a straight red card for a challenge from behind on May with 15 minutes left Jags boss Jackie McNamara being sent to the stand for his comments to referee Stephen Finnie.
Both sides traded blows before the final whistle, however a goal could not be forced at either end, and Accies held on for the win.
