Queens mourn passing of prolific scorer Black

Queen of the South have announced that their all-time second highest goalscorer Bobby Black passed away on Monday at the age of 85.

Black scored 120 goals in his 346 appearances for the Doonhamers in a nine-year period that began in 1952 after first seeing success on the other side of the country with East Fife. Despite being a Dumfries local and guesting for the Palmerston side during the Second World War, Black joined the Methil side in 1946 and won the League Cup with the Fifers in season 1949-50 when they defeated Dunfermline 3-0.

Black and his team-mates also reached the Scottish Cup final that season against Rangers and finished fourth in the top flight, with that position surpassed two years later in Black’s last campaign with the club when they finished third.

In 78 league games for East Fife, Black, who wore the same pair of boots throughout his career, scored 23 goals and his good form continued at the Doonhamers, where he was rewarded with a cap for the Scottish League XI against the League of Ireland XI in Dublin in 1954. He scored twice in a 3-1 victory and after leaving Queens played non-league football for Bath City and Bridgwater Town before settling in Somerset.
