Cameron wants more as Blue Brazil move eight points clear

Cowdenbeath are beginning to shake off the attention of Arbroath in the race for the title as Saturday’s 2-0 success over Airdrie United moved the Blue Brazil eight points clear of their second-placed Gayfield rivals.

The Central Park side’s third league win in a row was secured with a goal in each half, with Marc McKenzie heading home a Lewis Coult cross eight minutes from the break to open the scoring.

Mark Ramsay sealed their success with a penalty just before the hour-mark after Diamonds goalkeeper Connor Fairley pulled down the wriggling Coult in the box.

Table-topping player-manager Colin Cameron is not getting carried away, saying: “There is a lot of work to be done before anyone can say we have a commanding lead. All I can ask the boys is to keep doing what they are doing and picking up the wins they are picking up.”

Airdrie manager Jimmy Boyle had no complaints, saying: “They are a good side that deserved their win and you can see why they are league leaders.”

Arbroath appear to be running out of steam as their 2-2 draw at East Fife made it five successive games without a win for Paul Sheerin’s side.

Andrew Cook fired the Fifers into the lead from the edge of the box, with the Red Lichties’ Stuart Malcolm heading in an equaliser before half-time.

Stevie Hislop edged the hosts in front again just after the break, but Gavin Swankie netted directly from a free-kick with 12 minutes left to secure a point.

Dumbarton jumped up the table into fourth place following their 1-0 win over visitors Brechin, with Bryan Prunty netting a last-gasp winner for the Sons.

The goal came after Scott Agnew had been fouled by Bryan Hodge. Craig Nelson saved Agnew’s penalty, but Prunty netted the rebound.

Stirling continued their progress under interim boss Greig McDonald with a 1-0 win at Albion Rovers thanks to Craig McLeish’s controversial first-half goal. Darren Smith was flagged for offside, but referee Crawford Allan allowed the goal to stand and he then angered the Coatbridge club further when he ignored a foul by Bryan Allison on striker John Gemmell in the penalty box.

The dismissal of Stirling’s John Cawley for violent conduct did not alter the outcome.

Forfar remain bottom despite a 3-2 win over third-placed Stenhousemuir at Ochilview. Ross McMillan and a Mark McCulloch own goal had the Warriors ahead twice. However, Chris Templeman scored a brace before Martyn Fotheringham hit an injury-time winner.
